3D Rapid Prototyping

Rapid Prototyping Made Easy

Many product designers and engineers who are researching additive RP systems as a way to test form, fit and function of their prototypes may be unaware that there is a better, cheaper, faster solution. Roland subtractive RP systems (SRP™) produce form models faster than any 3D printer on the market and easier than any other CNC mill on the market. That’s because Roland offers a complete software/hardware solution that combines the ease of use of 3D printers with the benefits of CNC-machined parts.

Lower cost of ownership – with no annual maintenance fees and low cost materials, Roland MDX users save thousands over the annual cost of other RP systems. Roland MDX works with a wide range of materials and delivers a smooth surface finish with accurate tight tolerances.

MDX-40A and MDX-540 series milling machines cost significantly less than 3D printers while producing precision prototypes out of a wider variety of non-proprietary materials. A larger selection of materials makes it easier to create prototypes, including UV resistance, bending strength, surface hardness and electrical conductivity. Roland SRP solutions come with SRP Player, powerful, easy to use CAM software that delivers the speed, tight tolerances and exceptionally smooth surface finishes required for prototyping and customised rapid manufacturing applications.

Functional Prototypes - Mill functional prototypes using a wide range of materials that additive systems do not support. Users can choose from popular engineered plastics such as ABS, Acetal and Nylon, as well as acrylic and polycarbonate for transparent parts and a variety of woods and metals including aluminium, brass and copper. Compared to additive RP systems, Roland desktop devices produce functional prototypes that are better for structural, thermal and electrical testing.

Models & Moulds - Product designers rely on models to thoroughly review a design and confirm its fit, finish and functionality. Roland’s MDX series creates models in ABS and other materials used to produce actual products. As a result, users can review a prototype that closely matches their final product. The MDX series produces precision injection moulds, parts and jigs for small lot production. The MDX-540 mills light metals such as aluminium and brass to meet a range of production demands

Product Design

Turn Concepts into Reality

The ever increasing demand for high quality product design places real pressure on designers to visualise their concepts quickly, accurately and above all cost-effectively.

The Roland range of digital workbench tools and 3D scanning technology enable a wide range of materials to be modelled and a concept to be proven in a material before committing to a full production version. By inexpensively turning concepts into three-dimensional prototypes our range enables multiple concept iterations to be modelled quickly and in a variety of materials.

By keeping the process in-house you are able to produce tangible prototypes to test ergonomics, fit, form, function and pattern-making, with the obvious benefits of eliminating costly outsourcing and maintaining the security of proprietary concepts - all of which makes perfect business sense.

Textile & Fabric Signage Solutions

Soft Signage involves using printing on fabric or textile media for signage and display. It has become widely popular with a wide varieties of fabrics that can be printed by eco-solvent, UV and aqueous inks just like printing PVC and paper. The most popular fabric is polyester with different thickness and texture for many different applications such as banners, exhibition signage and textile solutions. Cotton and canvas are also becoming popular especially for photo realistic indoor graphics and art display. In addition to the these applications, fabric media has certain environment benefits over traditional PVC based media.

Most PVC based medias used for sign graphics and digital printing contain chemical components that pollute the environment. Many of these materials do not easily degrade and cannot be recycled. On the other hand, most of fabrics do not contain harmful chemical components and do not generate environmental wastage. Fabrics degrade much faster and can be also recycled. In addition to the environmental benefits, fabric medias offer brilliant colour and are much lighter and flexible than PVC for handling, hanging and transport, and yet are strong enough to replace big billboard banners.

As well as standard eco-solvent or UV printing for fabric, sublimated textiles are growing rapidly in popularity. Sublimated prints are easily transferred to polyester fabric for vibrant flags, banners and textiles that preserve the fabric’s natural drape and texture. Featuring eight piezo inkjet print heads, the 74" Roland Hi-Fi Express FP-740 produces stunning graphics from custom-formulated, clog-free Heatwave SBL2 sublimation inks. Roland also offers the VersaArt RS-640S printer in a 64” sublimation model featuring Heatwave SBL2 sublimation inks.
